Around The Next Bend...

The Alley Oop 6.7 Mile run is coming up in just a couple weeks. This will be the last GRC race of 2004. It is also the race where we conduct a very primitive election of the 2005 GRC Officers. What bright stars appear on the horizon to lead us into 2005? Do you have what it takes?

     Treasurer:
Well, it appears that Richard Taitague will likely continue as         Treasurer if those present approve. The advantage with Richard

is that he is honest as the day is long. The club never need worry
about mismanagement or lack of fiscal restraint. Plus, the club
finances are not terribly complicated: We collect dues and
corporate grants, we buy ice, ribbons, shirts, timers, racing bibs,
and breakfast after races for volunteers and officers. The
Treasurer also prepares and publishes in the newspaper, an
        annual financial statement.

Berrie Straatman volunteered his accountant-wife, Maria, for
this position. And we'd be glad to receive her nomination for
2005. Richard keeps plenty busy coning the courses. And we're
told Maria Straatman can computerize the books. So, Maria, if
you really are interested, let us know at the Alley Oop!

      Secretary:
Josephine Pinto. Will likely continue to be invovled in tabulating
results at races, but I wouldn't be surprised if she would like to
hand over some responsibilities from her already very busy
schedule. What are the main duties of a GRC Secretary?

                    • Keeping minutes of the GRC Officers meetings.
(Actual minutes needed or kept are extremely few)

                    •
Processing the membership renewal with the Road
Runners Club of America (RRCA) once annually.

                    • Setting (with officers) & Printing annual race
calendar and membership application at the
                      Turkey Trot membership renewal.

                    • Oversees tabulation of finishing times & race results
at the close of each race. Maintains files of these
                      records (forever).

                    • Monitors points earned by GRC members toward
GRC Runner of the Year awards.

                    • Sends race results to webmaster in excel format.

        Vice President:
Our current VP, Joanne Bonine, steps down this year and will be
relocating after more than 30+ years to Washington. We are very
grateful for her service to the club and are going to miss her. But
we send her off with our fondest wishes and prayers.

Flo Blas has indicated her willngess to stand for nomination. We
         welcome this offer of support.

         The Vice President's duties include:

                     • Phoning notifications of upcoming GRC races into the
PDN Sports Notes about 2-3 weeks prior to the race.
(usually 2 weeks in advance of the race).

                     • Oversees race morning sign-ups.

                     • Takes up the President's duties when the President is
away or unable to be present.

                     • Solicits corporate sponsors as does the President.

          President:

Current President, Neil Culbertson, will retire from the office,
with regret as he has had too much fun doing this. But heavy
demands of homeschooling, pastoring, a newly formed
company, and such things make it impossible for him to

continue. Culbertson has promised to maintain the website, do
occasional t-shirt art as needed, and be helpful at races.

Darren Fukuda has recently been asked to consider nomination.
We think Darren would be an excellent fellow for this position.

What does the President do? Well, mainly he/she:

                      • Oversees the big picture and tries to help coordinate
the details. A president may have as big or small a
public persona as one desires. Pres's keep in contact
with the other GRC officers and ensure everyone
needed for the upcoming race has been contacted and
                        will be there.

                      • Calls meetings of the officers as needed to coordinate
                        the club's business.

                      • Delegates tasks as responsibilites as needed. Oversees
recruitment of volunteer support for races.

                      • Decides with the other officers policy on use of funds,
replacement of equipment, replenishing of cones, etc.

                      • Make final calls on any questions pertaining to a race,
e.g., disqualifying a runner for rule infractions,
allowing or not allowing late registrant, etc.

                      • Handles member questions as needed.

                      • Leans heavily on Gaynell Marsh who is the real
brains behind this organization. The Prez will
enjoy the friendship of a lifetime and be mentored
by one of the kindest and most enjoyably eccentric
running gurus in the Pacific Rim.

This is all the president needs to do. Beyond this the prez can
help provide vision for the club within its stated mission . The
Prez can call in to the radio stations with Public Service
Announcements about upcoming races and keep the GRC in             the public eye. The Prez can encourage the development and
recruitment of future leadership and support for the GRC.
